By Christine Hess, Nevada Housing Coalition Executive Director
Dear NHC Members and Stakeholders,
These challenging times demand strong and consistent leadership who is willing to listen and take action. In Nevada, we are grateful for our local, state and federal elected officials, agency staff and nonprofits that have come forward with solutions for our pandemic-inspired housing crisis.
As you know, Governor Steve Sisolak signed Emergency Directive 025 to bring needed relief through policy and resources. Coordinating with Attorney General Aaron Ford and Treasurer Zach Conine expanded the network of stakeholders providing technical expertise and insights. The Nevada Housing Coalition advocated strongly for a statewide emergency housing assistance program funded with Nevada’s Coronavirus Relief Funds to provide rental and mortgage assistance to those feeling the immediate financial impacts and facing real housing security issues. We are thankful for this thoughtful and timely response.
We have also been advocating and supporting collaboration and coordination across the state to streamline efforts for the sake of efficiency. Our efforts have come visibly through our three statewide webinars featuring elected officials including U.S. Senators Catherine Cortez Masto and Jacky Rosen and Treasurer Zach Conine. Additionally, our recent webinar "Our Re-opening and Our Housing" highlighted how our state and local governments are providing relevant resources through their CARES Act funding. The City of Reno launched their expanded program last month and the Cities of Las Vegas and North Las Vegas just released their programs and Clark County and the State will follow soon.
Behind the scenes, the Coalition is actively supporting the Clark County Housing Recovery Team and communicating data and information regularly to a variety of stakeholders including the Nevada Treasurer’s Office, the Nevada Housing Division and many of our frontline housing partners.
BEYOND THE PANDEMIC
Although COVID-19 is consuming and driving many efforts for the Coalition, we continue to work on the bigger picture of advancing affordable housing in Nevada including preparations for the 2021 legislative session and providing research, data and analysis to keep our members informed.
We appreciate your engagement and look forward to future collaborative efforts.
Be safe and well,
Christine
